Woodhurst 6 - Nostromo 4
Independent Sunday league
Parmiters Sports Ground, Sunday 28th March 04

Woodhurst returned to Nelson Road after clinching the League title, and despite an unconvincing display, they overcame a spirited Nostromo side whose performance, becoming the first team this season to score more than two away goals at Parmiters, belied their position in the table.

Going forward wasn't an issue for the newly crowned champions who looked capable of scoring at any moment, but a slack attitude towards defending was obvious as the visitors tried to exploit the space.

However, it took the hurst only 15 minutes to break the dead-lock and that lead soon became three. First it was Jamie Bradbury, collecting a pass just outside the box, he took advantage of the 'keeper's short-comings to delicately lob into the back of the net. Nigel Jordon doubled the lead tapping home an Andrew Sheppard cross, and then Sheppard himself put Woodhurst further in front slotting away following a neat through-pass.

But Nostromo were having chances of their own and they pulled one back when a quickly taken free-kick surprised the defence and the forward looped over an advancing Gray. Bradbury soon restored the Hurst's three goal cushion. When Jason Fullerton's deep cross was dropped by the 'keeper, the number 9 was there to clip in for number four.

Either side the break, a two-goal rally from Nostromo made sure the game was far from over and gave Woodhurst some thinking to do as their advantage was cut to just one goal, But Woodhurst turned the screw once more and when Jordon crossed to the head of Sheppard six-yards out, there was only one place the ball was going making the scoring 5-3.

But plucky Nostromo kept coming and again pulled the teams within one goal, setting up a grandstand finish. The match was finally settled in the closing moments when a hand-ball inside the box gave the ref no option but to point to the spot. With two goals already, and a second hat-trick in two games on the cards, Sheppard stepped forward and directed his shot into the roof of the net.

Woodhurst were made to work for the three points, but in the end their overall strength showed as they maintained their unbeaten league record this season.
