Woodhurst Football Club
The History of the 'Hurst

It all began with a beer-fuelled conversation in The Travellers Friend in Woodford Green in the spring of 1987. A group of Dad's had just watched their sons lose a Cup Final at Woodford Town and having dissected every minute of the game, the conclusion was to form a football club with the best players of the aforementioned team. Over the next year players were recruited, mostly from Trinity Catholic High School, a sponsor was found, Perry's Catering, a competition entered, The Enfield & District Youth League Under 17 B Division, and it was agreed that the founder of the Club would also be the manager - Bill Kelleher. Finally, a name had to be chosen, and seeing as most of the Club's founder members resided in Woodford and Buckhurst Hill, an amalgamation of these towns gave WOODHURST F.C.

The years that followed have seen many highs particularly in The Forest District Sunday Football League - four successive promotions and a championship from Divisions 5 to 1 between 1992 and 95 bear testimony to that. Flourishing social events, with six trips to Southport, and a fifth promotion, to the Premier Division in 1998. Then after two seasons in the top flight the time came to leave the Forest and District league behind and a move to The Independent Sunday League Division One followed.

The inaugural ISL season proved one of eventually realising the Clubs on field potential by achieving the "double" in style. An unbeaten league programme; 17 wins and one draw and a 5-1 Cup Final victory made it the most successful in the history of Woodhurst so far.

However, it was almost bettered during the following Premier Division campaign, as they went on to help themselves to the Championship, but ended up on the losing end in two very hard fought cup finals. This season, alongside the launch of the club's website - www.WoodhurstFC.co.uk, a similar pattern has followed, with the side finishing as League Champions and reaching the same two finals again.

Off the field social events have continued to influence the sides superb team spirit with post-match analysis over a pint or two in The Nightingale in Wanstead plus the end of season trips to Prague - with a match at the ground of Slavia Prague - followed the next year with Aalborg, Denmark and then in 2002 the end of season tour party found themselves in Vicenza in Italy.
