Woodhurst 11 - Ludlows 0 Essex Sunday Junior Cup, Round Three
Parmiters Sports Ground, Sunday 4th January 04
On a weekend that had a few shock results in the FA Cup 3rd round, there were none that stood out quite like the 'Hurst's Essex Cup 3rd round destruction of Ludlows of the Corinthians League. Four goals from Jordon, three from Hughes and additional strikes from McShea, Souleyman, Fullerton and Taylor pummeled the visitors in perhaps Woodhurst's finest performance of the season so far.
The conditions for the game were ideal - a mild January morning, no wind and a freshly cut and rolled Parmiters meant that the boys from Nelson Road were itching to show that the previous game's draw had been a mere blip in form. Despite a break imposed by the Christmas holidays which saw most of the squad eating and drinking to excess, the boys looked the more impressive of the two teams straight from the kick off. Within a couple of minutes Woodhurst had taken the game by the scruff of the neck and had started testing the opposing goalkeeper. Sure enough by 10 minutes, Jordon had latched onto a through ball and delivered a smart shot on the turn from the edge of the area to leave their keeper helpless.
Woodhurst were expecting a bit more opposition from the visitors but none came, with the exception of a couple of half-hearted attacks which were easily broken up by the impressive back four of Clifford, Bashford, McShea and Taylor. Five minutes after the opener, the 'hurst's lead was doubled when Jordon broke down the left and delivered a inch perfect cross onto the forehead of Hughes who coolly guided the ball past the goalie.
More goals followed as McShea deftly lobbed the 'keeper from the edge of the area following an poorly cleared corner and then on the stroke of half-time Souleyman seemed to run the length of the pitch and beat most of the opposition before slotting the fourth into the corner.
The second half began as the first had ended with Woodhurst peppering the Ludlow's goal straight from the off, squandering several good chances. Jordon soon added his second by skipping round a defender, and for the first time in countless games, burying the ball into the back of the net when faced with a one-on-one.
The game was being dominated in the middle of the park by the ever-impressive Ladbury and Sheppard, and Sheppard it was who crossed from the right for Hughes to power in his second header of the morning. This however was almost the last action for Sheppard who had to substituted to the sound of laughter for not being unable to keep down his breakfast. His replacement Probert slipped into the central midfield berth with consummate ease and within 5 minutes had played the pass of the game by sending fellow sub Fullerton (Clifford) clear to round the keeper and steer home his 3rd of the campaign.
By this point the visitors were well and truly broken as Woodhurst attacked at will, playing at times what can only be described as champagne football. Jordon and Hughes completed their hat-tricks with Jordon adding his fourth and the rout was completed when the prolific Taylor broke free from left back and thundered in arguably the best goal of the game from 20 yards.
The win moves Woodhurst into the area semi-final and there can't be anyone who fancies a trip to Walthamstow in the next round.
