Woodhurst 4 - Lorient 0 Independent Sunday League
Parmiters Sports Ground, Sunday 29th September 02
A opening day victory for the Hurst was just what Woodham ordered as his side cruised to a 4-0 win over Lorient, a side who come May, will certainly be challenging for honours.
It took Woodhurst a few minutes to get the ball down a play, but when they did thet looked much more likely to score, Bradbury and Woodham both coming close in the early stages. But it was an own goal that started it off.
Probert crossing towards Lawley who was beaten in the air by the Lorient number 3 who done Roy's job and directed the ball into the top corner.
An hamstring injury for Bradbury midway through the first half, followed with a Woodham muscle pull set Woodhurst back, and it wasn't until late in the second half that the home side turned the key and finished off Lorient.
With Taylor, Bashford and the outstanding McShea marshalling the defence, Lorient never really looked likely to score, but the one-goal lead looked fragile until 75mins.
Damion Spriggs, who been threatening all morning, latched onto a through ball from Rogers, as he carried it into the area, the advancing keeper could do little else but watch Spriggs' deft chip nestle into the net.
Now well on top, it was soon three. A smart move out on the right ended with a cutting pass from Hughes to Probert inside the box who followed Spriggs' lead to chip the stranded goalie.
Leevan Rogers rounded off matters when he outstripped the Lorient defence. With support in the box, the young Harold Wood rude boy opted to shoot from a tight angle, but his decision was right as he drove fiercely into the top of the net.
Following last season's defeat in the same fixtures, these were three very good points that could have proved tricky.
