Woodhurst 3 - Krona 2 Independent Sunday league
Parmiters Sports Ground, Sunday 4th April 04
A last-gasp goal from Jenssen Clifford handed Woodhurst a dramatic winner in their final league game of the season, maintaining their 100% home record.
Against a good Krona side, who have somewhat under-achieved this season, Woodhurst were given a stern test, but Clifford's spectacular looping effort in the closing moments secured the three points.
But it was the visitors who took the lead when Alex Alexander's linesman's flag was ignored and the cross in was directed past Tom Gray by a well-taken Krona head.
However, a fine Andrew Sheppard free-kick soared into the top corner - giving the 'keeper little chance - and the scores were level.
Krona then found themselves with the advantage again early in the second half, and once again Sheppard pulled the Hurst level with his ninth goal in three matches, drilling home from 8 yards.
Then, with the game seemingly heading for a 2-2 draw, Clifford found himself in space wide on the right and sent a high ball toward the danger-zone. Everyone could only stand and watch as the ball sailed over the the goalie's flailing arms and nestled inside the back post. Standing still in astonishment - this was the man who missed a penalty only two weeks earlier - Jenssen was mobbed by his team mates and the three points were in the bag.
Though Woodhurst were not always convincing in their own performances throughout the year, there was only one place the title was heading, and with 40 points from a possible 42, the statistics simply highlight Woodhurst's authority on the ISL and underline why a new challenge may be around the corner next season.
With two cups still to play for too, the season is not yet over for the Hurst.
