Woodhurst 3 - Essex Minors 2 Independent Sunday League
Parmiters Sports Ground, Sunday 19th October 03
The Hurst continued their perfect start to the season with a fifth straight victory after the overcame Essex Minors with the bare-eleven, including two new faces.
Injuries and absences have blighted the club over the last three games, but once again their clinical striking was the difference in a game that could so easily have gone the other way.
But it couldn't have started any better for the home side. With little more than ten seconds on the clock the ball made its way to Jan Souleyman on the left who pciked out a perfect, first-time pass, through to Nigel Jordon who provided the sublety to guide around the advancing keeper and into the net.
Though Essex Minors had a couple of opportunities during the opening half, the first 45 belonged to Woodhurst who added two more goals before the break - again the prolific Jordon, and debutant Andy Sheppard heading home a centre to make it three-nil.
However, after the break, the tide turned and when the boys from Hornchurch pulled two goals back in the first 10 minutes, it was game on and the Hurst had to battle.
Despite the unacceptable moments of bickering and arguing, Woodhurst came through and defended stoutly - but with the occasional loss of concentration - and could have added a fourth before the referee called time.
Hopefully, when the team is back to full strength, the frustrations that cause the on-field disagreements will cease and the great team-spirit and unity that Woodhurst is all about will rise to the top.
