Woodhurst 2 - Drofmor 6
Independent Sunday League

Parmiters Sports Ground, Sunday 2nd March 03

The Woodhurst performance was below par from the kick off but as the already muddy pitch deteriorated, it soon became more difficult for the team to play the fluent passing football they like to.

There was little goal mouth action in the opening 25 minutes, but Drofmor continued to battle well and won several corners. It was from one such corner that a poor clearance was punished by one of their midfielders who lashed the ball home from 6yds. The goal seemed to momentarily spark life back into the 'Hurst who created a number of clear goal scoring opportunities, only to see the ball refuse to cross the line. Worse was soon to follow for the home side - nobody closed down Drofmor's lanky midfielder out on the right wing, his pastry puff cross was pushed into the net by the limp-wristed goalkeeping rookie McShea. To make matters worse, Bourke was unable to continue due to illness and was replaced by the other debutante Atkins.

At half time the 'Hurst were despondent but confident of turning the game around, knowing that they would continue to create plenty of chances and indeed this was the case in the opening 15 minutes of the second half, but once again the home side couldn't turn the ball into the net.

During an increasingly infrequent forage by the Drofmor forwards, McShea slipped on the glass-like turf and presented their centre forward with an open goal - 3-0. McShea then returned to his more favoured outfield position of centre midfield and Hughes went in the sticks and immediately reinforced the belief that Scotsmen should never play in goal - being lobbed by the Drofmor centre forward after a lucky ricochet put him through.

Ten minutes later Fullerton, who suffered a nasty cut to the head but battled on, reminiscent of Butcher-esque heroics, suggested that he may have still been concussed as he scythed down the young Drofmor forward to concede a penalty which was easily dispatched.

At 5-0 down the Woodhurst boys put on a bit of a fight back and almost immediately Tony Taylor scored after a typically powerful run down the left channel. Five minutes later Nick Bashford struck a left foot volley that somehow trickled over the line. Woodhurst were at last playing with something like the ability they lacked all game - Both Houlton and Rogers went close and McShea saw a clever effort headed off the line, onto the bar and out in a move that summed up Woodhurst's luck.

The final humiliation came on the stroke of full time, the young Drofmor forward escaped his markers and shot passed the luckless Hughes to make the final score 6-2.
