Woodhurst 7 - Broadway 1 Essex Sunday Junior Cup, Round Two
Parmiters Sports Ground, Sunday 2nd November 03
Woodhurst took their first steps along the difficult path of the Essex Cup with a comprehensive victory over Broadway at a very wet and slippy Parmiters.
Roy Lawley's second game in care-taker charge was another display of fast-paced attacking football, which was this week matched by quality finishing. Only a few bizarre refereeing decisions from perhaps the strangest official ever to appear at Nelson Road prevented the home side from winning by a larger margin.
It was one-way traffic for the early part of the game as Woodhurst's quick passing game ripped the visitors apart and the lead soon arrived through the unlikely Simon Probert who cropped up 0n the left to round-off a great move and slot past the 'keeper.
Moments later it was two when Jamie Bradbury tucked home a Probert cross after a swift attack down the right.
A penalty up the other end, which the referee declared a 'great decision' and one that 'most referees would have missed', pulled Broadway back to within one goal. However, Bradbury's second just before half-time, profiting from a mix-up in the Broadway defence to power past the goalie, put a more realistic slant on the scoreline.
Woodhurst were dealt a double blow in the lead-up to the half, when both Tony Taylor and Jan Souleyman limped off, and it looks like they'll both miss the away trip to Campion next week.
When play resumed Woodhurst regained control, and although Broadway were allowed more of the ball in the second 45, whenever the Hurst went forward they looked like scoring and four more goals followed. After a number of attempts, Nigel Jordon eventually found the net before Andrew Sheppard kept up his goal-a-game rate with a fine strike into the top corner from Jordon's pull-back.
Jason Fullerton was unlucky to see his goal ruled out. Latching on to the 'keeper's blunder, the official, resembling an older Tommy Lee Jones, decided that, although he was not even facing the play - assuming the 'keeper had collected the initial cross - Fullerton's goal be chalked off anyway.
Nevertheless, the fifth came shortly after. Patrick Ladbury looked like scoring his first goal for the club, but though his effort was blocked from close range, the rebound hit the legs of the hapless Broadway defender who guided the ball into his own net.
Another goal from Sheppard rounded-off the scoring and Woodhurst eased into the next round.
If Woodhurst continue to play like this, they'll have a very good chance of going far in this competition, but it surely won't come more simpler than this victory against a side who, for some reason, were expecting an easy ride themselves.
