Redcliffe Rovers 0 - Woodhurst 4
Independent Sunday League

Parmiters Sports Ground, Sunday 16th February 03

A below par Woodhurst performance still resulted in a comfortable win against a poor Redcliffe side, thanks to a hat-trick from Simon Probert and a Tony Taylor lob.

With only the bare eleven, and no goalkeeper, Jamie Bradbury and Jan Souleyman were forced to share the duties with a half between the sticks each, but they may as well have not been there as Redcliffe failed to register one shot to test them in a match reversed from Ilford Cricket Club to Parmiters due to the recent wet weather.

Woodhurst were in control from the off and some superb passing football continually opened up space to exploit on either flank, but the finish was always lacking. However, with nearly a quarter of the match gone, Souleyman beat the right-back to lay back to Probert who took one touch before unleashing a strike into the top corner.

Moments later it was two-nil. As a Redcliffe move broke down, the ball found Roy Lawley whose first time pass on the turn put Probert through. With only the 'keeper to beat, the north London terrier drilled his shot with the outside of his foot beyond the haplass number one.

After the change around, Woodhurst took their foot off the gas and, though they remained in control, their passing was sloppy on a very bobbly surface. Leevan Rogers, who was having what some might regard as a 'mare, could find any level of form and it was left to full back Tony Taylor to show him the way home. Given the freedom to regularly join up with the attack, the big number three found himself facing only the goalkeeper and unleashed a typical Taylor piledriver that struck the crossbar, much to the relief of the Redcliffe defence. Though that shot deserved reward, it was his next foray forward that proved more fruitful. Hanging up a deep cross from the left, the Big T-Bone watched as the ball drifted over the crowded box and nestled neatly inside the far post.

With the game all but won, Woodhurst just played out time, but their was still time left for Probert to grab his hat-trick and the sides fourth. Ryan Houlton broke the offside trap and faced yet another Woodhurst one-on-one, as he was about to pull the trigger, Redcliffe's great lummox at the back scythed down the ginger genius just outside the box with what would normally have cost him a fine and suspension, but with just 10 seconds remaining the referee saw sense just to ask him to leave the field before the free-kick was taken - and he did, only after a hopeless appeal. Some umming and aahing over who was to step forward, but, determined to get his hat-trick, Probert accepted the free-kick and buried it in off the post and the whistle went to allow us to go down the Nightingale.
