Kamara 1 - Woodhurst 0 Independent Sunday League
West Ham Memorial Park, Sunday 27th October 02
Awful conditions almost saw this important clash postponed, but the round
referee deemed the blustery weather playable as the Hurst lost their first
game of the season in east London.
With many players out, Woodhurst were forced to start with the bare 11 - but play most of the game with only 10 -
against a Kamara side also without some key faces, and the home side started
the brighter.
With little more than five minutes gone, the Kamara forward found space
behind the Hurst defence trying to adjust to the wind, and fired home under
a tug from Tony Taylor. Instead of allowing the goal to stand, the referee
made his first questionable judgement and awarded a penalty, which was
dispatched just out of Andy Norton's reach.
More bad news for the visitors as moments later, Jamie Bradbury left the
field unable to carry on with his ankle injury sustained a day earlier,
leaving Woodhurst to battle from behind a man light.
The Hurst sought an equaliser, but when pot shots were the order of the day,
the openings failed to appear. After the break they continued to pile on
the pressure, with both centre halves, Jonah and Bash, pushing forward
continually, but the lack of penetration prevented the deserved equaliser.
Even Bashford's claims for a penalty moments from time were waved away by
the referee, who made a number of stupid bookings, from his centre circle
vantage point, and the Hurst's chances of a point were gone.
An unfortunate end to a morning against a side who in eight games have only
ever managed to conquer Woodhurst from the penalty spot. Though they now
have their work cut out to take the league for a third successive year, on
the positive side Woodhurst didn't waste £20 paying the useless
referee.
