DOUBLE-HEADER

Emerhorns 1 - Woodhurst 1
Independent Sunday League

Goodmayes Park, Sunday 26th January 03

Woodhurst finally got 2003 underway with their first game of the new year, a 'Double-Header' with strugglers Emerhorns.

After a first half of complete control by Woodhurst involving three or four prime opportunities to open the scoring, Emerhorns somehow took the lead early in the second thirty.

Failing to clear their lines, and ball out of the Woodhurst defence found it's way back into their own box. Paul McShea struck the clearance away only to see it rebound off an Emerhorns knee and trickle out of reach of the diving Jimmy Woodham, deputising for the absent Andrew Norton, and over the line.

Against opposition like this, who failed to trouble the defence at any other time, a win was the only option and Woodhurst began to throw everything at the home side.

Eventually the equaliser came. Jan Souleyman done the hard work on the left and sent in a low cross towards the six yad line. Jamie Bradbury, who moments earlier had seen a volley brush the top of the bar, made no mistake this time. His diving header in front of the covering defender gave the keeper no chance.

But for all their possession The Hurst just couldn't find a second in the match, shortened to one hour, that probably favoured Emerhorns more.

Normal business was resume early in the second game. Jimmy Woodham now out on the park, latched on to a through to tuck neatly under the over-worked Emerhorns keeper.

Woodham soon made it to, Ronaldinho style, when his deep inswinging cross from the left foxed the keeper who could only manage a slight touch before the ball dropped in to the empty net.

Emerhorns did manage one shot, but when the finally got behind the Bashford/McShea partnership the effort done little to test the second deputy keeper, Jamie Bradbury.

In the final 30 minutes of the day, Damion Spriggs added his magic to increase The Woodhurst goal advantage and put some sort of reality on the scoreline.

A hat-trick from the big man, who linked up well with Jimmy Woodham, gave the south Londoner something to smile about and, though the pitch was a quagmire, Woodhurst were home and dry.
