Essex Minors Twos 3 - Woodhurst 2
Independent Sunday League

Bretons Farm, Sunday 10th November 02

Another defeat in the space of two weeks has severely dented Woodhurst's hopes this year before they have had a chance to really get going this season. But this is a game they know they should have won.

Though in control of much of the first half, the defensive re-shuffle to 3 at the back in the absence of both Tony Taylor and Paul McShea, meant that the usually strong back line looked a little jaded. Some excellent football from the away side at times saw Essex Minors chasing shodows, but their own hard work allowed them to have a say in the match. However, it was woodhurst who took the lead.

Jan Souleyman played a neat one two with Ryan Houlton on the left which allowed him to glide past his marker and in to the box. His cut back was met by Jamie Bradbury who swept the ball in to the roof of the net from ten yards.

Now on top the visitors lokked like going up a gear, but Bradbury was again forced off the field with a re-occurrence of his troublesome ankle injury and with no substitutes available (RipVan Rogers was on his way) the Hurst were reduced to ten-men for the remainder of the half and it was with the last kick of the 45 that Minors levelled after a mix-up in the Woodhurst box.

After the break Woodhurst went further behind and a battle was now on their hands. Essex Minors were playing well and working hard and Woodhurst lacked the penetration up front, though both substitute Leevan Rogers and Jan Souleyman kept the keeper busy with fine efforts. But as Woodhurst probed one end, Minors grabbed a third to surely put the game beyond the champions.

With time running out, Woodhurst managed to pull one back from a corner, but it was too little too late. The Hurst now hope their luck returns to cast off the injury problems that have plagued them so far for them to form a serious challenge for their third successive championship.
