Drofmor 1 - Woodhurst 2
Independent Sunday League

Cottons Park Romford, Sunday 26th October 03

Woodhurst continued their perfect start to the season with a sixth consecutive victory over Drofmor at Cottons Park sending them into a four-week break from league fixtures full of confidence.

Though always in charge of the encounter, the 'Hurst, under the caretaker reins of Roy Lawley while Jimmy Woodham takes paternity leave, made heavy work of the win.

It wasn't until midway through the first half that the visitors finally made the breakthrough. After chances for Jordon, Bashford and Bradbury, the latter grabbed his first goal in three games collecting a Simon Probert through ball and drilling low past the keeper.

Woodhurst continued to ask questions and it was a mystery why the advantage remained so slender at the break and an even bigger puzzle when Drofmor drew level.

A speculative ball forward looked to be heading towards the safety of Andy Norton's gloves. However, the communication lines between he and Bashford fell down and the skipper proceeded to head past the advancing Norton and into the empty goal.

But Woodhurst were not about to stumble at this stage. Though their distribution was still at times a little poor, the Hurst were throwing a everything at Drofmor but strikes from Jordon, Bradbury, Clifford, Sheppard and Souleyman just couldn't tip the balance. However, with 15 minutes left the winner arrived.

Souleyman attacked down the left and delivered a perfect ball to the back post where Sheppard was arriving and left the Drofmor defence stranded. His well-directed effort was a fine example of the 'postage stamp' and, for a second week, the head of Sheppard has sealed three points for the Hurst.

The win takes Woodhurst to 18 points, the maximum from the six matches played. And an interesting point to note, it wasn't until 16th Febraury last season that the boys from Nelson Road had chalked up that tally.
