Campion 1 - Woodhurst 1 (Woodhurst won 4-3 on penalties) Godbold Cup 1st Round
Goodmayes Hospital, Ilford, Sunday 9th November 03
Woodhurst were given a run for their money, on the day Mark 'Chicken' McShea returned from 15-month voyage around the world, against second division outfit Campion who, from this display, would do well in the top flight.
Despite having 7 key players missing, it looked like it was going to be a walk in the park after Jason Fullerton's header after just 10 minutes had put the visitors in front, but the goal-fest that may have been expected, never materialised.
Woodhurst were in charge for much of the first half, but Bradbury and Jordon failed to convert on at least two occasions and the score remained 1-0 at the break. After the turn-around, Campion began to impose themselves and almost took advantage of the Hurst defence who were not at their best.
A harshly awarded penalty for an Alexander foul that took place outside the box, allowed Campion to level, and at that point in time, it wasn't undeserved.
However, Woodhurst rallied and stepped their game up, taking control of proceedings once more. But today, the goals were just not coming. Jordon and Lawley were both unlucky having efforts cleared from the line, while the former also struck the bar. Bradbury too had similar problems, striking the post when the 'keeper was stranded, while at the other end, Gray made a couple of neat stops that kept Campion at bay.
This one was going all the way, only penalties would separate the two sides today. After five tries each, the score was still level at 3-3 - Bradbury, Probert and Mark McShea finding the net, while Hughes and Alexander were thwarted - so sudden death it was. Up stepped the Campion centre back who'd had a great morning up to now and his strike was well-saved by Gray leaving Paul 'we've seen him miss these before' McShea to fire home his penalty and send Woodhurst into the next round.
Not the best of performances by any means, but a win nontheless, and Woodhurst now have a week off safe in the knowledge that after eight games so far, they are still yet to be beaten.
