Baronsmere 6-3 Woodhurst
Essex Sunday Junior Cup, Round Four
Elmbridge Sports Ground, Sunday 18th January 04

Woodhurst suffered their first defeat of the season in disappointing style as an away Essex Cup defeat ended their hopes of reaching the Area Final.

After an 11-0 drubbing of Ludlows in the previous round, the Hurst went into this firm favourites, but perhaps rated themselves too highly against a hard-working Baronsmere side.

On a very mucky pitch, though Woodhurst looked second best early on, the fact that they were playing well below their capabilities made them look able to come out on top, but the home side were having none of it.

Over-running our midfield, Baronsmere took the lead capitalising on a rare Gray error in the nets, but soon took control of the match even further making it 2-0. Then followed a spell of Woodhurst football not yet seen this season. Second to everything and lacking the graft of their Corinthian league opponents, three more quick fire goals sent Baronsmere in at the break five goals to the good.

Despite this, Woodhurst felt confident that, if they began to play football and work hard, they could take control of the game and perhaps overcome the odds.

Fired on by Jan Souleyman, who was no doubt looking to redeem himself after blaming the sun on a dodgy back-pass which gifted the third goal (and try to worm his way into someone's all-time XI), Woodhurst took the game to Baronsmere. Bradbury and Mark McShea both joined the action and soon Souleyman's hat-trick, including one penalty, had the visitors insight.

However, it wasn't to be and as they sought two more goals to level matters, injuries to Alex Alexander and Tony Taylor put Woodhurst down to ten men and the mockers on the slim chances of a revival. Even the introduction of the target-man/goalkeeper Andrew Norton up-front couldn't help the depleted side who were caught out on the counter with a final blow late on sending them out of the cup.
